Hyperhydrosis

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is the condition characterized by abnormally increased in sweating. Hyperhidrosis can either be generalized or localized to specific parts of the body. Hands, feet, armpits, and the groin area are among the most active regions of perspiration due to the relatively high concentration of sweat glands; however, any part of the body may be affected.

The cause of primary hyperhidrosis is unknown, although some surgeons claim that it is caused by sympathetic overactivity. Nervousness or excitement can exacerbate the situation for many sufferers. Other factors can play a role; certain foods and drinks, nicotine, caffeine, and smells can trigger a response.

A common complaint of patients is that they get nervous because they sweat, then sweat more because they are nervous.

Treating Hyperhidrosis using Botulinum Toxins

Botulinum Toxin (Botox ) works by blocking the nerves in the armpit that control sweat glands. Botulinum toxin injections are performed in the area to be treated. The needle that is used is a very small needle which is the same size as an acupuncture needle. A series of injections will be subsequently administered to the desired treatment site.

After the injections, the skin may appear slightly bruised, and the skin will feel numb from the anaesthesia. In approximately 3 to 5 days after the injections, a decrease of sweating in the treated areas will be noted. The process has to be repeated every 3 to 6 months for up to a year.
