A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure performed to enhance the appearance of the face. The procedure is particularly helpful for patients who have blemishes, wrinkles, uneven skin pigmentation, or scarring from acne.
Potential Risks
During your consultation, our doctor will discuss the potential risks of the procedure. Every procedure involves some level of risk. The potential complications of a chemical peel include:
- redness
- swelling
- tingling or throbbing that persists for a few days
- color changes in the skin that are unintended
- infection
- possible prolonged recovery
During the Procedure
Chemical peels may be performed with local anesthesia, which
will numb the area to be treated. In addition, intravenous sedation
may be given to make you more relaxed. First your skin will be
thoroughly cleansed. Then, the doctor will carefully apply the
chemical solution and perform the peel. At the conclusion,
appropriate dressings will be applied. The procedure typically will
take 30 to 45 minutes.
After the Procedure
After the procedure, our doctor will coat the treated area with protective gel. If you had a lighter peel, no covering is necessary.
The doctor will give you postoperative instructions before sending you home.
Use sunblock and to avoid sun exposure, as well as to use petroleum jelly to keep the skin from drying out.
In general, patients heal within two or three weeks following the chemical peel.
